Protein powder or muscle shake mix

I really like how a grown from earth stock is mostly discussed here because in the ends, only the dirt and sky remain.

Any thoughts on keeping a few jugs of high quality protein and mass building powders on hand? They last for too long, mix with water, milk or juice, easy to store, easy to transport (some even have built in handles), pack calories and vitamins, and taste decent.

For example from personal experience:

http://www.supplementwarehouse.com/v...dproduct=44591

Mix it with milk or milk substitute or water, doesn't matter. Just looking to see thoughts on high vitamin rich calories, long shelf life, and easy to carry. Could bury a full container in the ground near your bug out location

Reading my mind.

I was going to ask the same question this evening.

So what is the boards take on putting back some Whey Protein powder for when TSHTF?

I saw it in BJ's today for 36$ for 5 lb's.

One last thing to think about,

I have mixed these powders with instant puddings, bread mixes, cereals, pancake mix, etc... wtih great success. Thinking of ways to maximize storage, money, and quality caloric intake over an extended period of time.

Much easier to blend a protein powder source with carbs and not vice versa.

Looking forward to opinions from others.

As someone who has drank many a protein shake, the problem I see with them as preps is that they are very expensive calories. However if you enjoy them and make them regularly then I'd say you might as well have some around. Just don't buy more than you'd normally eat before it goes bad. You'll really wish you had that $40 back when you have to toss a full jug! This thread isn't complete without some recipes either. Stay away from that soy protein as well.

My go to shake
1 serving protien powder
1 banana
2 large tablespoon scoops of adam's peanut butter
little bit of oats (optional)
1-2 tablespoons plain yogurt (optional)
Ice
nonfat milk (just enough to make a good shake consistency)
a little bit of vanilla or natural honey.

Whats the "shelf life' of this stuff??

My personal favorite is Muscle Milk chocolate and banana. Yummy mixed with milk, but still good with water. GNC does a buy one get one half price beginning of every month.
Mix up only what you need and you will avoid waste. Packs well, and great for on the move consumption.
Hint - buy a mixing bottle, they're worth it.

2-5 years from all the stuff I've seen.

It is a good way to have a meal mixed up with water too. Tons of options out there - the top notch Whey Protien is pretty cheap for the most part.

If you want top shelf stuff you can hit bodybuilding dot com - I'm sure there is plenty of other stuff on the cheap if youa re not so concerned with quality of protien and digestors - but you had better get the right stuff or you will be fartin yer arse off. The ole standby as mentioned above "milk/soy, bananna and protien powder in the blender is a damn good breakfast or snack.

If you are thinkning protien powders for ease of meal prep - you should consider some good ole protien bars too. You can get them for as little as 75 cents per serving. Pretty cheap investment for easy quality energy. Steel Bars/Cliff Bars are a decent portion and mix of stuff - but most of this lower end cost stuff does have things super healthy folks wouldn't be into...i.e some corn syrup here and there.

Watch your ingredients on these things!
I was drinking protein powder a few years ago and gained 60 lbs in 2 months!
The powder had Suclarose in it. (sugar substitute) If you dont know the bad effects of it are, google it! You will be amazed at how it goes in and never comes out!
This is the ingredients of the powder listed above.

Metacarb-III (Proprietary Carbohydrate Blend Which Contains: Maltodextrin, Modified Food Starches), Peptol-III (Proprietary Blend Which Contains: Beef Protein, Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Hydrolysate, And Egg Albumin), Whey, Fructose, Lowfat Dutch Cocoa, Medium Chain Triglycerides, Natural And Artificial Flavoring, Metavite-III (Proprietary Vitamin-Mineral Blend Containing: Di-Calcium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Potassium Citrate, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin E Acetate, Niacinamide, Ferric Orthophosphate, Zinc Oxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Copper Gluconate, Retinyl Palmitate, Riboflavin, Thiamin Mononitrate, Chromium Polynicotinate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Cholecalciferol, Cyanocobalamin), Xanthan Gum, Cellulose Gum, Soy Lecithin, Salt, Aspartame, Carrageenan, Acesulfame-Potassium, Contains Milk, Egg, And Soy.

Is the Natural And Artificial Flavoring you listed the suclarose (Splenda)? Aspartame is Equal or NutraSweet. I think Aspartame is worse than suclarose from my research but both are probably not worth ingesting.

I got some extremely discounted from ebay a few years back and it is fine in bad storage past its best by date, but I very much agree on watching those labels. Very few brands will I buy and they tend to be the high dollar end.

Re: Protein powder or muscle shake mix

Most of those powders are inferior products. Even best selling brands have been accused of having much smaller and lower quality ingredients than listed. It's a crap shoot really.

One I trust is sold at http://www.mercola.com Made from raw, unpasteurized milk. Very tasty and I trust Mercola totally. I buy the three pack for $99.

The thing with Artificial and Natural Flavoring is, The FDA has approved many items to be listed in that category. They can put aspartame, msg, fluoride in the product and still be "legal".

I was at the health food store a while back looking at protein powders, the sales lady was telling me how good this one brand was.... Sure enough it had suclarose in it! She had no idea what it was! So be careful! Try Mercola's as the poster above suggested!

Become an avid label reader.

Costco has pretty good whey powder, at a reasonable price. The last bag I bought was 6 pounds for $20.00. I know it's a little more expensive now. I prefer whey powder to the meal replacement powders, they have way too many calories.

That is a LOT of sugar for breakfast and not enough protein. Sugar is simple not good for you, in any form, natural or not. It ferments in your body and causes cancer. Your pancreas is begging you to limit the sugar. Your hormone levels want less of it as well.

Sugar = illness.

The stuff I use occasionally use has no sweeteners or flavours. It doesn't taste bad, just plain. It costs 2x as much as the flavoured crap and I only see it from 2 brands. Suggests to me that it's way cheaper/easier for some reason to make the flavoured crap. If the flavoured crap was just the pure stuff with flavour added, then the pure stuff should be cheaper or the same price. Something is fishy.

I have a couple big tubs of MM on hand as well. Muscle Milk definitely isn't one of the better quality proteins / meal replacements, but they do taste good, store well and perhaps most importantly very easy to mix.

Sugar = illness.

I have calculated approximately 110 grams of sugar in the "Breakfast shake". The orange juice is 56 grams of sugar alone, and that is the base of my drink. How do you suggest I reduce the amount of sugar, while increasing the amount of protein? Thank you.

I have drunk this for years. High in calories and nutrition.
Blend it, baby!

 • Orange Juice: 2 cups
 • Ice cubes
 • Non-fat dry milk
 • Wheat germ: 2 heaping tablespoons
 • Oat meal: 2 heaping tablespoons
 • Vanilla Yogurt: 2 heaping tablespoons
 • One banana
 • One apple (or pear, strawberries, etc...)

I would welcome any suggestions on ingredients to improve it. Thanks.

The ingredients sound good and healthy... would only add some BREWERS YEAST.

If you're not used to it, start with one teaspoon, and over a couple of weeks build it up to 2 tablespoons... monster protein-energy-mirconutrient source.

Thank you, Uncle Scrooge. I had never heard of Brewer's Yeast, but I'll check it out.

Im eating some stuff at the mo that is 2 years out of date and was opened 2 years ago. I left it in a cool, dark, dry cupboard with the lid on tight, but the seals of course were broken. It is as fine now as it was then.

Poverty stricken countries seem to subsist on either bread or rice, adding some protein powder to make a protein "cake" or rice "pudding", will put you streaks ahead of the competition. Better nutritional stats and also moral raising.

Thanks for the rawreform link. I just started using the oil and the protein powder and am positively impressed. I am not hungry for a long time after eating 1 teaspoon of the oil and a heaping tablespoon of the powder in yogurt.

It is green, and tastes fairly strong in a weedy sort of grazing a vacant lot way, but my digestive system gives it a big thumbs up.
